Ladies Links for Golf Looks at Goal Setting for 2012

Ladies Links for Golf (www.ll4g.com) - the official online amateur golf community of the LPGA - will be hosting its weekly radio show tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. Log onto its website or ESPN affiliate station www.wpsltv.com. Host Debbie O'Connell will speak with LPGA Hall of Fame member Annette Thompson on goal setting for the New Year.

Glen Coombe debuts Vector Green Reading component to training

Vector Putting, green reading for the masses. "We do the math, you make the putts" is their slogan.

Glen Coombe, The Putting Doctor, announced the launch of his new Vector Green Reading business component.

He said, "I wanted to add a green reading component to complement what I do for students of the game. The goal was to add to my Money Back Guarantee Putting Experience clinics and my SAM PuttLab evaluations and training. Being able to add a historically proven method fit my needs to a tee."

Vector Putting is the culmination of the work of Col. H.A. Templeton. He published his book "Vector Putting - The art and science of reading greens and computing break" in 1984. Templeton was a US Air Force test pilot who was one of the first to fly three times speed of sound (Mach 3) in the SR71Blackbird high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. A proficient golfer he used his advance knowledge of physics to perfect the science of green reading. Templeton actually copyrighted the very first putt simulator for television back in 1988 but could not find a network interested in licensing the technology at the time.

Vector takes the science of green reading to a simple level and allows students to predict accurately the amount of break for any putt. Students are trained to interpret slope and speed and then to use a small aim book to verify the amount of break to allow for a given distance. Most putts can be read in less than 20 seconds.

"We've opened up the Early Adaptor program for instructors who would like to be certified to teach Vector Putting. For the next 30 days you can sign up via the web site, www.readgreens.com/pro-certification/early-adopters?affID=17 use password "faststart" to access the discounted payment portal. I'm happy to have been the very first East Coast instructor on the Vector Instructor Locator page."

Instructors receive recognition via a web locator on the VectorPutting.com web site and sufficient Vector Green Books to double their investment in certification.

Coombe said, "The clinic format for Vector learning will see students pay $99 for a 90 minute experience with 8-10 students per clinic. Already I'm seeing strong demand for this new sector of my coaching business. I think any instructor / coach should be interested in Vector and in putting as a way to improve the game."

The 2012 Humana Challenge, the annual PGA TOUR golf tournament which takes place Jan. 16-22 at the Palmer Private Course and Nicklaus Private Course at PGA WEST and La Quinta Country Club, has allocated approximately 1,100 ticket coupons to Community Blood Bank branches next to the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage (39000 Bob Hope Dr.) and in Indio (46100 Rubidoux Street, C9-C10).

Blood donors are offered the ticket coupons while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket coupons are redeemed for actual tickets at the gate during tournament week. Last year's tournament ticket giveaway promotion yielded approximately 1,200 units of blood collected.

"More than ever before, the tournament is placing a strict emphasis on healthy living and physical and emotional well-being," Humana Challenge Tournament Chairman Larry Thiel said. "We remain committed to our relationship with Community Blood Bank and ask those within our community to give blood if you can during the holiday season."

Tickets will also be distributed at scheduled Community Blood Bank mobile blood drive events in the Coachella Valley.

"Community Blood Bank has been a beneficiary of the Humana Challenge since it was established in 1972, and we feel very fortunate to be charitable partners," said Nicu Cocione, center director of Community Blood Bank in Rancho Mirage.

"Our long-standing ticket program with the tournament is quite well-known among our regular donors going back to the 1980s, when Bob Hope was an ambassador for donating blood and entertaining the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Combat Center to show appreciation to blood donors in the desert. We hope this year's tournament will attract many new donors who want to make a difference in our community this holiday season and help save lives."

Community Blood Bank has served donors and patients in the Coachella Valley since 1972. It provides 100% of the blood and services needed by Eisenhower Medical Center, Bush Naval Hospital and Palo Verde Hospital, and stands ready to provide blood to other area hospitals as needed. The tournament continues to honor and celebrate the legacy of Bob Hope, and will award the inaugural Bob Hope Memorial Trophy to its winner.

Tournament week is designed to bring the idea of "participatory wellness" to life for people of all ages. It will feature a first-ever national conference focused on health and well-being on Tuesday, Jan. 17, entitled Health Matters: Activating Wellness in Every Generation and highlighted by a keynote address from President William J. Clinton.

During the past 52 years, the tournament has generated more than $50 million in donations to the Eisenhower Media Center and charities within the Coachella Valley.

Fourteen Golf announces new RM-11 Wedge available commercially

(IRVINE, Calif.) - Fourteen Golf, recognized as a worldwide leader in wedge design with 38 professional tour victories in 2010 and 2011, announced today that the company has shipped their new RM-11 Wedge into retail and holiday sales have been outstanding.

According to Fourteen Golf COO Marcy Kamoda, "We are extremely happy with the early sales of the RM-11 Wedge. It sold well into retail and is selling through at a positive rate. We contribute this success to the company's reputation as a wedge authority and for the awareness it has gained on the PGA Tour. In addition, people are still looking for a wedge that conforms to the new USGA rules and provides spin. This wedge with the larger grooves has filled a nice place in the marketplace."

The new RM-11 Wedge was a proto-type on the PGA Tour well before it shipped into retail. Its instant acceptance on the exclusive tour validated its performance characteristics associated with the enlarged grooves and detailed testing proved it.

The larger grooves translate to maximum spin with exceptional control. The new USGA conforming Fourteen Golf trapezoidal grooves have been enlarged by 15% as compared to its predecessor. This increase in overall groove volume enhances spin retention particularly on partial shots and provides extraordinary control, incomparable spin and precision like accuracy.

To ensure optimal spin with precision and tighter tolerances, Fourteen Golf mirror mills each larger groove on the RM-11 Wedge.

This additional procedure takes an enormous amount of time but it is done to achieve and attain the highest spin performance possible.

The RM-11 Series of Wedges feature a different sole shape according to a specific loft. The 48-degree loft is designed for optimum performance and control with a full shot. Where the 56 and 58-degree lofts are engineered to employ or take advantage of the bounce with an approach shot. The 60-degree wedge is designed to assist with a high lob shot.

The leading edge on this totally new wedge is relatively straight but slightly rounded to give the impression of wrapping the ball on each shot. Professionals and amateur golfers alike will appreciate the versatility these wedges provide. For a solid and pure shot the engineers designed the lie angle to be slightly upright and made it 64 degrees (for 56-60 degree models).

Touring Professionals appreciated the original "reverse taper design" so the engineers used it as a platform on the RM-11 Wedge but they increased the weight distribution on the upper blade to create a Fourteen Golf signature "reverse muscle design." The weight is perfectly proportioned on the blade and club head which creates stability through impact.

Fourteen Golf utilized nickel chrome molybdenum steel for the RM-11 Wedges because of its durability and resistance to wear. This specialized material allows the high quality - high performance trapezoidal grooves to stay in perfect condition which ensures optimum performance. It available in a non-glare nickel chrome plated half matte finish and a dramatic non-glare black finish that gives the club head a distinctive appearance.

The RM-11 Wedges are available in one of the distinguished dealers that carry Fourteen Golf including; golf specialty stores like Roger Dunn, Golfers Warehouse, Golf Mart, Vans, Olympic Golf, Haggin Oaks and more. To find a Fourteen Golf retailer, visit the company website at www.fourteengolf.com and click on the retail locator heading.

Fourteen Golf understands the importance of the short game, this significant portion of the game has created an unprecedented demand on most tours for their signature series of wedges. The company prides itself on the 18 titles won this year using their short game weapons.

Fourteen Golf is a burgeoning golf equipment company that takes great pride in their tour program. The company has recently signed PGA Professionals Chad Collins and Arjun Atwal. These two additions to the Fourteen Golf professional staff proves that the Fourteen Golf tour program is succeeding which is critical to the company's overall growth initiative. The feed back they receive from the touring professionals furnish key information for the research and development team as well as provides keen visibility.

For more information on Fourteen Golf call 949-852-8811 or visit the company website at www.fourteengolf.com.

West Michigan Golf Show attendees receive free golf at Treetops Resort

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) - Coming off an unprecedented and record-breaking year for rounds played, Treetops Resort is naturally very optimistic about the 2012 golf season. That's one reason why it's giving an unprecedented bonus for all attendees at the 2012 West Michigan Golf Show to be held February 10-12, 2012 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.

Besides its sponsorship of the highly popular Par-Three Challenge, Treetops will provide a free midweek round of golf - a $64 value - to all Golf Show attendees registering at its booth. So for the price of admission, every golfer at this year's Golf Show can go home with a free round at one of Michigan's top resorts.

"After an outstanding golf season last year at Treetops, we wanted to start off the new year with a bang," said Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf. "Guess you might say our Golf Show offer is a big bang for no bucks. And as we found out last year with our successful pay/book early program, we're hoping these golfers will also extend their visit with us by adding a hotel night or an extra round of golf. But even if they play just that one round, we're certain they'll have fun and know it was worth the visit."

Show Manager Carolyn Alt says the Treetops incentive is a great addition. "It represents a terrific value for our patrons and demonstrates how hard everyone works to make the show better and different year after year," said Alt.

The Treetops Par-Three Challenge will again be the Show's most popular attraction. A fully landscaped golf hole complete with bunkers and a water hazard will entice golfers to compete for prizes (Treetops golf) and have a chance to win $25,000 if someone makes a final ace on Sunday. This year the event's charity recipient will be Patriot Golf Day, the nationally acclaimed initiative that provides college scholarships for the children and spouses of military personnel disabled or killed in the line of duty. On Labor Day weekend, golfers across the country are asked to add an extra dollar to their green fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships. Last year, the Michigan PGA raised $164,315, the fourth highest total of any PGA Section in the country.

Held continuously since 1989, the West Michigan Golf Show will attract thousands of Michigan golfers to hundreds of exhibits and will feature clinics, putting contests, junior golf instruction, swing analyzers and a "one stop" golf shopping opportunity with countless "golf show specials." Sponsors include Treetops Resort, Fidelity Investments, Golf Association of Michigan, Boyne Resorts, Michigan PGA, and Srixon. Several charities will benefit from their involvement with the show.

Produced by ShowSpan Inc., the West Michigan Golf Show's hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Tickets are $9 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-14, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door as well as online at www.westmichigangolfshow.com.

Special note: Until Dec. 25, 1/2 price tickets are available as "stocking stuffers" by going to the website, click on "buy tickets," and add "STOCKING" in the promotion code.

Starting Time High-Performance Tees, the Tips, Adds Extra Yardage to Improve Golf Scores

(OCEANSIDE, Calif.) - Golfers wishing to improve their scores with better, straighter shots, have the ability to do so using TIPS performance tees, according to Hugh Penton, Starting Time president.

South American golf pros and U.S. engineers shared in the development of these exceptional new tees. The result is a true revolution in tees that are designed to add extra yardage on tee shots. These are not just for the golfer who hits only from the black tees, but for all golfers wishing to add extra length and straightness to their tee shots. Why not pick up the extra yards and the straighter shots as long as it conforms to the rules of the USGA and R&A?

These tees are the result of an ingenious design and the use of the most flexible PVC on the market. On the top edge, the engineers put eight tips for the ball to gently rest on, producing less friction and better control over the spin of the ball. "Players using the TIPS can improve golf scores through extra yardage on tee shots," says Penton. The PVC tees are designed to last round after round without ever losing their ability to produce longer and straighter drives.

The TIPS come in three sizes and colors. They are also available in two types of packages. One package contains three of the long tees, for oversized drivers. The other includes one long tee, one mid-size tee and a shorter tee for three-par holes. All are packaged in attractive clamshells that fit on peg board racks or company supplied counter displays. The suggested retail price of the two package types is $6.95 each. Samples of both packages are available upon request for pro shops or retailers.

Feel Golf announces new line of Square Groove wedges and irons

(SANFORD, Fla.) - Feel Golf Co., Inc. will be introducing a new line of wedges and irons with real square grooves ("SG") for the upcoming 2012 season. The "SG" line and other new product lines, such as putter grips, cavity back irons, drivers, and Tour irons will also be unveiled at the 2012 PGA Merchandise Show in Booth 2300.

The "SG" wedges will not conform to the 2010 USGA rules, but that is a non-issue for about 98 percent of golfers.

"There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the USGA's decision to change the 2010 groove rules and these rules do not affect the recreational player," said Lee Miller, Feel Golf's CEO. "The 2010 groove rule is designed to decrease ball spin for the Tour players and unless you are planning to qualify for the Tour or a USGA event, non conforming grooves can be used until 2024.

The new "SG" club line(s) will help you play better and feel much better about your game. In fact, if you are not a Tour player, the new USGA groove rule actually compromises your short game, especially from the rough and bunkers," he added.

Known for producing some of the best feeling wedges in the golf industry for the past 25 years, Feel Golf will offer both USGA conforming and non-conforming wedges and irons beginning in January 2012 to meet all of their customer's needs. The square groove club line will be identified with the logo "SG" on each club.

In the new "SG" line, Feel Golf has blended the company's inherent playing technology into their new line of wedges and irons long known by the Tour player, the better golfers and golfers who want to be better.

"To minimize the loss of ball spin and control for the recreational golfer with the new groove ruling, we made significant changes to our business model by adding the "SG" line of non-conforming irons and wedges to reinstate most of the spin lost with the new 2010 groove ruling, Miller said.

"Ultimately, we believe the smaller grooves hurt the typical recreational player far more than the Tour player. We always strive to maximize performance with feel and that's a key benefit to our end customer, the recreational golfer."

The new "SG" wedges will be available in lofts of 52, 56, 60, 64 and their best selling 73-degree. The "SG" Cavity Back and all White Competitor blade iron set, both designs are non conforming.

Feel Golf will also unveil their new 2012 drivers, grips and their PVD Tour Competitor blade irons and wedges at the PGA show.

PING’s Solheim proposes Golf Ball Distance Rating System

(PHOENIX) - John Solheim, Chairman & CEO of PING, is proposing that golf’s rule making bodies consider a “Ball Distance Rating” system (BDR) that would replace today’s single golf ball limit with three different ball distance limits – one that is the same as today’s standard, one that is shorter and one that is longer. Solheim’s “A Long Term Response to Distance”  explains how including a BDR system with a new “Condition of Competition” would give professional events and golf courses an efficient way to address future concerns about distance.

“A BDR Condition of Competition would create a simpler way to control distance at the tour level – and keep the competitive design of the world’s great courses in play,” said Solheim.  “This concept addresses the unique talents of the top 0.1% of the world’s golfers without hurting the other 99.9%.”  Solheim also noted that a key aspect of the idea is to give players who would benefit from it the option of using a longer ball, a choice many golfers may appreciate, especially when taking on today’s longer courses.  “The distance rating of the ball used would factor into handicaps, just like slope rating or choice of tee box does today.”

Solheim recently sent his BDR idea to golf’s governing bodies, and suggested it could be a positive factor in helping to sustain and grow the game.  “I appreciate the challenges faced by those who help govern the game,” said Solheim.  “I am hopeful they give my idea further consideration and use it as a starting point to address some of the issues the game is facing. The positive impact golf has on so many groups requires that we explore a variety of ideas to improve the health of the sport. I hope others have suggestions to offer as well.”

John Solheim’s “Long Term Response to Distance” follows:

A Long Term Response to Distance
For as long as I can remember, golf has been challenged by concerns over driving distance. Unfortunately, over the past dozen or so years, many actions taken in response to that challenge have often been short sighted, costly and/or controversial - such as altering some of golf's most revered courses and adopting restrictive golf club rules. Now, we learn average driving distance on the PGA Tour just had another increase – it broke through 290 yards for the first time (and with so many dynamic young golfers working toward a Tour card, who knows where it will go from here). So, once again we are hearing the question: “what, if anything, should be done about it?”

With so many other challenges facing the game, we need to be sure any “distance discussions” focus on the long term – on solutions that can quickly and easily respond to future increases in distance (no matter the cause); on ideas that give professional events and courses a tool that allows each to best address the distance concerns unique to their venue; on proposals that recognize it is far simpler to adjust the ball to the course, than to adjust the course to the ball. Finally, we need a response that will resolve this issue once and for all. To get this discussion rolling, here is how I think we can do just that:

- Replace today's single golf ball distance limit with three different "Ball Distance Ratings" (or "BDRs") - one that is the same as today’s limit, one that is shorter and one that is longer.

- Adopt a “BDR Condition of Competition” – each event could apply the BDR appropriate for its course design and yardage, and for the skill level of the golfers competing at the event.

- Include BDR as a factor in calculating handicaps – just as "slope rating" or choice of tee box does today, the BDR of the ball you use will factor into your handicap.

BDR golf balls should have similar flight characteristics as today’s ball (trajectory, spin rates, etc) with the only variable being distance. Some details may be challenging, but I have no doubt the USGA and the R&A are up to the task. With distance as the only variable, an example of what could be done would be to adopt a color code for the several BDRs (just like we do with tee boxes), perhaps using “gold, silver and bronze”. A “silver dot” rating could apply to balls that conform to the current distance limits, a “gold dot” rating to balls that are longer (perhaps 30 yards longer), and a “bronze dot” rating for balls that are shorter than today’s ball limit (again, maybe 30 yards shorter). More BDR levels could be added, if needed, to address future increases in driving distance by Tour professionals.

If the game adopted a "BDR Condition of Competition", I believe the vast majority of events would choose to allow the same balls (and ball limit) used today. Most courses hosting professional tour events were built with, or have added, sufficient length to challenge the world’s best golfers. Perhaps a small number of tournaments, those played at some of the game’s classic courses, would find it exciting to put the original design elements of the layout back in play by requiring shorter rated golf balls. These events may even generate a lot of interest, and TV viewers. A key point of this idea is that it puts control over those decisions with the event itself. It also gives each venue a new “long term” option for responding to future increases in driving distance – bring in the bull dozers, or simply adopt a new BDR.

I recognize asking tour professionals to occasionally switch to a different rated ball creates a new challenge. However, rising above golf’s toughest obstacles is what they do best. These skilled athletes likely realize that imposing equipment limits on tens of millions of amateurs – a group that is critical to golf's future – is not the best way to resolve issues unique to competitions played at the highest levels. I think the most talented professional golfers in the world would be willing to switch to a shorter ball once in awhile, if that would benefit the remaining 99.9% of us.

Giving amateurs the option of playing a new, longer rated, ball is another key aspect of this idea. Many golfers find it very difficult to play today’s longer courses. Using a longer ball should make that experience more enjoyable. It may even bring some ex-golfers back to the course. Perhaps this idea could even reduce the time needed to complete some rounds, a goal shared by everyone.

There will likely be occasions when amateurs tee it up with a shorter rated ball. Some golfers may choose to do so when playing some classic courses, ones that cannot add yardage, in order to bring out the competitiveness of the original design. Others may choose to do so because it has a positive impact on their handicap. Some courses might even recommend using a shorter rated ball. Higher handicap players may find it easier to play alongside more experienced golfers – from the same tees – when using different rated balls. Each of these choices gives some control over the distance issue where it is needed most – with the golfer and the course.

This proposal could also help the USGA and the R&A. The handicap system may benefit from adding "ball rating" as a factor. This solution is also consistent with the Joint Statement of Principles announced by the USGA and R&A in 2002: it provides an immediate and an efficient way to address future increases in distance, and it is not bifurcation - amateurs and professionals will still play to a ball limit, just not necessarily the same one on the same course. Adopting a few new ball distance ratings is basically the same as adding a few more tee boxes – and adding tee boxes is not bifurcation.

In order to fully evaluate this idea, the constructive input of golf ball manufacturers will be needed (PING currently does not sell or manufacture golf balls, but we did for over 20 years). I realize this suggestion presents challenges, but a BDR system brings with it new opportunities as well. Adding new categories of “conforming” golf balls should lead to exciting new ways for golf ball companies to competitively innovate, and it could increase golf ball sales. If it were as simple to develop a club rating system that included a similar opportunity to innovate longer drivers, I know I would welcome it. However, if golf once again chooses to address driving distance, it needs a practical long term solution, and I believe a BDR system would do the job.

All of us, including those in the manufacturing community, have a responsibility to offer new ideas and appropriately work with the rule making bodies to help improve the game It can be done, as demonstrated by the positive results from the November 2010 Vancouver forum, and the solution PING provided in resolving the Eye2 controversy on the PGA Tour in early 2010. I will continue to do what I can, and I believe others will as well. The game has seen many positive changes over its long history, changes that appropriately recognize the relationship between the challenge and the enjoyment of the game at all skill levels. I believe a BDR system would provide a way to continue do just that – for a long time to come.

Product Review: HIRZL Gloves

Tick tock ... tick tock. The clock is ticking and time is running out to stuff stockings and finish shopping for gifts under the tree. Let’s not forget about the gift exchanges.

What’s better than a last-minute gift idea for under $25? Three gift ideas for under $25!

HIRZL steps in the save Christmas with the Trust Feel, Trust Control and Soffft Flex golf gloves.

According to HIRZL, being skilled on the green isn’t just about having a great technique or chalking up lots of experience. It’s also about having the very best kit to support you.

Ken Venturi used to endorse a product with mention of slippage of even a fraction of an inch sending shots 20+ yards off line. That math certainly holds true for the golf glove you choose to wear.

“Your glove provides the only direct connection between you and your club, directly impacting your grip, the reliability of your swing and the overall quality of your game,” the HIRZL website states. “Now, for the first time, the golf community has gloves designed to overcome the well-known weaknesses inherent in other glove brands. We’re making sweaty palms, inferior bad-weather control and gloves that crack and tear after just a few rounds history.”

Compared to other gloves, the Trust Feel offers twice the grip in dry weather and four times the grip in wet weather. Amazing, but the Trust Control goes beyond that - three times the grip in dry weather and five times the grip in wet weather. Both offer a 100-percent  sweat-free palm.

“As a medium to high handicap player, you want to be able to effortlessly maintain a firm grip in order to achieve longer shots and improve your control over the ball’s direction, leading to fewer poor shots,” HIRZL says. “Our TRUST Control gloves with thicker, more structured palm leather are perfect for you.

“If you are a more seasoned or lower handicap golfer, you want to be able to really feel every swing, but still take control with a glove that gives you optimum grip,” HIRZL adds. “Then the TRUST Feel all-weather golf glove is the ideal model for you, offering a thinner palm to deliver an unsurpassed golfing experience.”

Both gloves look and feel great. Want a surprise? Both are made from kangaroo leather, mate. The Control is textured, while the Feel ultra-thin.

Kangaroo skin sounds good, but you’re used to reading the words “cabretta leather” on your golf glove packages. No worries. HIRZL’s Soffft Flex fills that need.

“For the world’s top players, cabretta leather gloves are the Gold Standard,” HIRZL says. “All SOFFFT Flex gloves are hand-crafted and are produced with the highest-quality Platinum Cabretta, undergoing no less than 72 separate manufacturing steps. Thanks to the revolutionary HIRZL SOFFFT technology – which includes an extremely complex tanning process – our gloves will always offer you the perfect fit, remain supple and grip your club perfectly.”

Get to a store today (find a list of dealers who sell HIRZL at www.hirzl-web.com) and finish your holiday shopping in style. The golfer on your shopping list will thank you with more accurate shots and lower scores.

Nine Buffalo Communications clients rank among top casino courses

(VIENNA, VA) - Nine golf courses represented by Buffalo Communications - the global lifestyle division of Billy Casper Golf, owner/operator of more than 130 golf properties nationwide - are among the top-50 in "Golfweek's Best: Casino Courses 2011" ranking.

The nine courses, listed in Golfweek's December 9-16 issue, represent eight golf facilities in four states. Six of the layouts are located in Mississippi - Fallen Oak (ranked No. 2), Grand Bear (No. 26), Dancing Rabbit's Azaleas and Oaks courses (Nos. 28 and 48, respectively), The Preserve (No. 32) and Shell Landing (No. 44). Rounding out the remainder of Buffalo Communications' clients on the list are Washington's Salish Cliffs (No. 11), Idaho's Circling Raven (No. 14) and Michigan's Sweetgrass (No. 27).

"These well-known sites always deliver an exceptional golf and gaming experience," says Rich Katz, Managing Director of Buffalo Communications. "Located in pristine regions, they give visitors a wealth of activity options both on the course and on the casino floor. We were thrilled to see them recognized for their commitment to excellence."

Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate each had a hand in designing three of the courses - including Dancing Rabbit's two courses in a collaborative effort. Fazio also designed Fallen Oak while Pate crafted The Preserve. Gene Bates, who is also a client of Buffalo Communications, created Salish Cliffs and Circling Raven while Jack Nicklaus crafted Grand Bear, Paul Albanese designed Sweetgrass and Davis Love III laid out Shell Landing.

Here are brief descriptions of each course, by state:

Fallen Oak - which winds through, around and across century-old oak trees, streams, lakes and marshland - is ranked No. 41 among Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses."

• Grand Bear, Saucier: Affiliated with Grand Biloxi Casino Hotel & Spa, majestic Grand Bear takes golfers for a peaceful, yet challenging trip through exquisitely sculpted and protected wetlands in a pristine Mississippi forest.

• The Preserve, Vancleave: The Preserve - which encompasses 245 pristine acres and is affiliated with the Palace Casino Resort - is surrounded by an additional 1,800 acres of dedicated nature preserve. The native pitcher plant bogs, cypress swamps, long-leaf pine savannah, live-oak groves and native grass prairies are integrated into the course design.

WASHINGTON

• Salish Cliffs, Shelton: All but two holes of this brand-new (it opened in September 2011) amenity of Little Creek Casino Resort are encircled by lush forestry. Salish Cliffs - which also boasts 360-degree views of Kamilche Valley - has already been honored nationally by Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine, Golfweek (twice) and Forbes.com.

Solheim, PING Chairman and CEO. “The new iPING Skins Game feature is exciting because it promotes friendly competition, which will grow and strengthen our global PING community. Of course, the real benefit of winning is that your putting stroke is consistent, which is the key to making more putts on the golf course.”

The iPING Skins Game feature allows players to compete from anywhere in the world or side-by-side. To initiate a game, a player chooses a three-, six-, or nine-hole match and can invite up to three friends to join, or let the Auto-Match feature locate playing partners. The game format follows a traditional skins competition where holes have point values, which increase throughout the match, and ties on a hole carry over until someone wins a hole (and the skins) outright. The person with the most points at the end of the match wins.

On each hole, a competitor rolls five 10-foot putts to establish his or her Consistency Score, reflected in a number similar to a golf handicap. The player with the best Consistency Score wins that hole and plays first on the next hole.

iPING Skins Game also has a Party Mode for contestants in the same location. Party Mode uses AirPlay to show a live leader board on your HD television using your existing wireless network and an Apple TV.

iPING Skins Game is a new feature of the iPING App, available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

Both the iPING App and iPING Skins Game work in conjunction with a PING Cradle, which holds the mobile device and clips onto the putter shaft just below the grip.

Cradles are available at Apple Retail Stores in the United States, via the Apple Online Store, and from PING authorized golf shops. PING Cradles are available for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4th generation).
