Product Review: SwingOIL

In my 30s, a life of physical activity began to negatively affect my day-to-day mobility. While I was formerly able to bounce back the morning after a tough workout, that was no longer the case.

Now in my 40s, aches and pains are as common as the sun rising. It doesn’t take much more than life to put a hitch in my giddy-up. I needed a little something more than Advil, so I began my search with SwingOIL.

The SwingOIL mantra is “Get loose. Swing smooth.” But what is it about the product that promotes this loosening effect? Let’s take a quick look (via WebMD and Wikipedia) at the active ingredients:
Glucosamine is marketed to support the structure and function of joints (often targeted at people suffering from osteoarthritis);
Chondroitin sulfate is a structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression;
Turmeric is a spice, commonly used in Asian food. The root of turmeric is also used widely to make medicine - combating ailments like arthritis, heartburn (dyspepsia), joint pain, etc.;
Panax ginseng improves thinking, concentration, memory, work efficiency, physical stamina, athletic endurance, and prevents muscle damage from exercise;
Rhodiola is used for increasing energy, stamina, strength and mental capacity; and as an “adaptogen” to help the body adapt to and resist physical, chemical, and environmental stress. It is also used for improving athletic performance, shortening recovery time after long workouts;
Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein; and
Citrulline Malate. Some people also take L-citrulline to build muscles and improve athletic performance.

Put it all together, and you have SwingOIL.

Suggestions from the company:
- Drink it 15 minutes before tee-time to stay loose and sharp;
- Drink it during your round to make sure you don’t play tight when it matters most; and
- Drink it after the final putt, to help your body prepare for your next round.

Think of it the same way you view oil for your car. It keeps the moving parts lubed. Choose between three delicious flavors - Lemon-Lime, Orange and Strawberry-Banana. I’m partial to the Lemon-Lime, but was shocked at how tasty the Strawberry-Banana is.

Rip open a 3-ounce pouch and enjoy.

Historic Columbus Country Club in Midst of Golf Course Renovation

(Columbus, Ohio) – Historic Columbus Country Club is in the midst of a two-year golf course renovation project that began in the fall of 2016. The newly renovated front nine recently reopened on May 19th, while the back nine will undergo its renovation transformation after Labor Day 2017. The entire 18-hole renovation and layout will be finished by Memorial Day 2018.

Golf course architect Kevin Hargrave is overseeing the extensive renovation which is focusing on the original design concepts of famed golf course designer Donald Ross and bringing the proper scale back to the Columbus Country Club property. During front nine renovations, 1,000 trees were removed exposing the extensive canvas Ross once worked with. Original lines of play were brought back, while the newly renovated bunkers reflect the style and feel of Ross’s work. Hargrave also incorporated numerous new or repositioned tee complexes making the course more playable for the entire membership. When complete, the new layout will stretch from 5,400 to 7,200 yards.

Managed by Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, Columbus Country Club also boasts a nine-hole executive course along with eight tennis courts, a large swimming pool, spacious clubhouse and a diverse entertainment calendar.

TPC River Highlands, Remodeled by Bobby Weed Golf Design, Attracts Strong Field for '17 Travelers

(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida) – A strong field was attracted to the 2017 Travelers Championship, played June 19-25 at TPC River Highlands, a private golf club in Cromwell, Conn., which was redesigned by Bobby Weed in 1989 in consultation with former PGA Tour players Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie. In addition, last year Weed worked in conjunction with PGA Tour Design Services on a course-wide bunker renovation at TPC River Highlands to update the strategy, based on ShotLink data, and to improve playability and maintenance.

“TPC River Highlands, overlooking the Connecticut River, offers players a variety of half-par holes with an exciting four-hole finish in an amphitheater setting like no other,” said Weed.

For a thrilling and dramatic victory at this year’s Travelers Championship in front of record crowds, Jordan Spieth blasted out of the bunker on the par-4 18th hole, the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Daniel Berger, marking Spieth’s 10th PGA Tour win.

Operated by the PGA Tour, the 18-hole par-70 TPC River Highlands has been the venue for the tour’s annual Travelers Championship, previously known as the Buick Championship and the Greater Hartford Open, since 1984.

Some of the other notable names in this year’s 156-player field at the Travelers Championship included Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy and Jim Furyk, among others. The defending champion was Russell Knox.

Fred Couples Wins American Family Insurance Championship with Bridgestone Tour B330-S Golf Ball

(COVINGTON, GA) – Fred Couples relied on the Bridgestone Tour B330-S golf ball to capture his second PGA TOUR Champions title of 2017, a two-shot victory at the American Family Insurance Championship contested this past weekend at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison, Wis.

Trailing by three shots entering Sunday, the World Golf Hall of Famer drained four birdies on the front nine en route to a final round 66 and his 13th win on the PGA TOUR Champions. He trusted the B330-S to produce better green side spin and longer drives to give him the edge needed to beat the competition.

The B330 series is engineered to deliver maximum results for skilled golfers who demand high-level performance in all facets of their game. Designed based on data gathered from Bridgestone's proprietary ball fitting program and validated by the top players in the world, the B330 series is unmatched tee to green.

“I went out Sunday knowing I had to go low and that my equipment would allow me to do that,” said Couples. “Regardless of the shot, my Bridgestone ball delivered exactly what I needed to outpace the pack and put up a winning score.”

“Fred continues to play exceptional golf and the fact he has won twice this year is a testament to that,” says Angel Ilagan, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “He takes his game very seriously and only puts equipment in play that gives him an advantage over the competition. Whether you’re a former Masters champion, like Couples, or trying to break 100 for the first time, our golf balls will outperform anything on the market and help you find your edge."

In addition to Couples, FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, Olympic bronze medalist Matt Kuchar, three-time major champion Nick Price and young phenoms Bryson DeChambeau and Hudson Swafford have all won using Bridgestone products. Scores of fellow professionals choose to use Bridgestone balls without compensation.

The course closed on May 23, 2017 for a redesign focused on updating the course features and practice facilities while increasing playability and sustainability. “It’s awe inspiring to watch Rees and his team go to work and return the magic to Rio Secco Golf Club,” says Eric Dutt, vice president of golf operations. “He is the best in the business and has been very involved in the entire process. Rio Secco has always maintained a high level of service and playing conditions. This renovation will further elevate the player experience.”

Renovation highlights include the following:
· All 18 greens stripped, cored out and re-grassed
· Five greens stripped, cored out, re-contoured and re-grassed
· Greenside bunker renovations feature new sand in all bunkers and some bunkers reshaped and reduced in size
· Practice tees expanded with natural turf to approximately 25,000 square feet
· New practice putting green constructed adjacent to practice tee
· Main chipping green redesign and the addition of a new practice bunker
· Butch Harmon School practice green redesign
· New forward tee construction on select holes

Rio Secco Golf Club rests at the foothills of the Black Mountain Range in Las Vegas, 13 miles southeast of the Las Vegas Strip. The course is a favorite among visiting and local golfers due to its quality conditions, unparalleled service and striking desert topography.

During the closure, golfers will have the opportunity to play the Top 100 Cascata, also a Rees Jones design and a sister course to Rio Secco. Cascata is located just a few miles from Rio Secco.

Titleist Balls, Equipment Lead the Way at this Week's Travelers Championship

(RELEASE) - After a record-breaking week at the 117th U.S. Open, the PGA Tour has now passed the midway point in the 2016-2017 tournament schedule. The first stop as players make the turn down the homeward stretch is Cromwell, Conn., and TPC River Highlands, host of this week's Travelers Championship.

For those players who endured the demands of U.S Open competition, The Travelers will represent a much lighter lift. The par-70, 6,841-yard layout at TPC River Highlands is nearly 1,000 yards shorter than Erin Hills Golf Course, with receptive greens and plenty of birdie opportunities.

One player who knows how a thing or two about making birdies at River Highlands is Titleist Brand Ambassador Justin Thomas, who shot the lowest score in relation to par -- a 9-under-par 63 in the third round at Erin Hills -- in U.S. Open history. At last year's Travelers, Thomas orchestrated a Sunday charge for the ages. He made five straight birdies to close out his front nine and added four more on the back. He finished with an 8-under-par 62 that propelled him to a T3 finish.

"It's a fun course," Thomas said earlier this week. "I mean it sounds crazy, but I feel like every time you tee it up you have a chance to shoot in the 50s. That's fun. If you get your putter rolling and you're driving it well, you're going to have so many wedges and so many short clubs in your hands where you can make a lot a lot of birdies and you can really post a low number. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some low numbers every day."

"This is my fourth time I've played and yeah, I'm very excited about this week. I've always loved this tournament."

And as players ease back into their normal routines and set their sites on some low numbers this week at the Travelers, Titleist is once again the overwhelming golf ball choice, with 108 players trusting a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball, more than six times the nearest competitor with 17 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist was also the top choice among players in the hybrids category (30) as well as the irons category with 43 sets in play.

Vokey Design Wedges also topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (211) category and Scotty Cameron putters were the top choice among players with 62 putters in play.

• • •

- Four players who finished inside the top 10 at this year's U.S. Open are in the Travelers field this week including the co-runner-up (Pro V1) as well as Titleist Brand Ambassadors Charley Hoffman (8th/Pro V1) and Justin Thomas (T9/Pro V1x) and Titleist golf ball loyalist Trey Mullinax (T9/Pro V1x).
- Nine-time PGA TOUR champion, Titleist Brand Ambassador Jordan Spieth (Pro V1x) will make his debut at this year's Travelers Championship. Spieth is currently No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking and sixth in the FedExCup. The 2015 U.S. Open champion has six top-10s in 15 starts this season, including a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
- Six of the last 11 winners of the Travelers Championship have been first-time PGA TOUR champions. Five of those players trusted a Titleist golf ball in victory, including J.J. Henry (2006/Pro V1x), Hunter Mahan (2007), the champions in 2010 (Pro V1x) and 2012 (Pro V1x) and Ken Duke (2013/Pro V1).
- Only two players have won the tournament in wire-to-wire fashion – Gene Littler in 1959 and Tim Norris in 1982.
- The best 72-hole score at the Travelers Championship is 258 held by Kenny Perry (2009/Pro V1x).
- The largest come-from-behind win is seven strokes by Titleist Brand Ambassador Brad Faxon (Pro V1x) in 2005.
- The Travelers Championship donates 100 percent of net proceeds to charity every year. Since 1952, the tournament has generated more than $36 million for charity and in 2016, the tournament generated a tournament record, $2.8 million for more than 160 charities throughout the region.
- In 2017, the primary beneficiary of the Travelers Championship will be the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Conn. Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to more than 250,000 seriously ill children and family members annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year.

USGA Accepts 7,149 Entries for 117th U.S. Amateur Championship

(FAR HILLS, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association has accepted 7,149 entries for the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled for Aug. 14-20, 2017 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

“Bringing the USGA’s oldest championship to Southern California for the first time since 1976 at two of the nation’s most prominent clubs in Riviera and Bel-Air is richly rewarding,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “The U.S. Amateur and its iconic Havemeyer Trophy, given to the champion, are held in the highest esteem by amateurs across the country and the world. Our entry numbers reflect that significance.”

Sixty-four players are fully exempt into the championship and the remaining places in the 312-player field will be filled through qualifying at 100 sites across the country and in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico between July 3-25. Forty-five states will host qualifying, with host state California leading the way with 13 sites.

Among the exempt players are: 2016 runner-up and University of Oklahoma senior Brad Dalke, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; University of Texas senior Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, Texas, who was the low amateur in last week’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills, tying for 27th place; University of Southern California players Sean Crocker, of Long Beach, Calif., who was a semifinalist in 2015, and Jonah Texeira, of Porter Ranch, Calif., who was a semifinalist in 2016; 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Stewart Hagestad, of Newport Beach, Calif., who was the low amateur in the 2017 Masters; and Sahith Theegala, a Pepperdine University senior from Chino Hills, Calif., who was a quarterfinalist in 2016.

In addition, 46 of the top 50 players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (as of June 21) are in the field, including No.1 Joaquin Niemann, of Chile; No. 2 Maverick McNealy, of Portola Valley, Calif.; No. 3 Dylan Meyer of Evansville, Ind.; No.4 Braden Thornberry of Olive Branch, Miss.; and No. 5 Collin Morikawa, of La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.

The USGA accepted entries from golfers in all 50 states, including 1,099 from California, as well as 48 other countries. The highest number of entries accepted for the U.S. Amateur is 7,920 for the 1999 championship.

The first entrant was Brett Robinson from Tustin, Calif., and Nicholas Caruso, of Lawrence, Mass., submitted the last entry, 35 seconds before the 5 p.m. (EDT) deadline on June 21.

Riviera will be hosting its second USGA championship, having hosted the 1948 U.S. Open, won by Ben Hogan. Bel-Air will be hosting its third USGA championship after previously serving as the site of the 1976 U.S. Amateur, won by Bill Sander, and the 2004 U.S. Senior Amateur, won by Mark Bemowski.

Sandra Palmer, Nancy Scranton To Be Inducted into Legends Hall of Fame at French Lick Resort

Induction will be held in conjunction with the Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank

(FRENCH LICK, IND.)  – LPGA veterans Sandra Palmer and Nancy Scranton will become the newest inductees into the Legends Hall of Fame.

Palmer, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and Scranton, a native of Centralia, Ill., will be inducted on Saturday, July 8, into the Legends Hall of Fame -- a permanent exhibit featured at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.

The induction will be held in conjunction with the Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank, set for July 10-12, at French Lick Resort. This year’s event will be sanctioned by the LPGA as a senior LPGA major championship and will feature many members of The Legends Tour.

“I was speechless – really stunned, but deeply honored to learn that I will be a part of the Legends Hall of Fame,” said Palmer, who now lives in Long Beach, Calif.

“I feel very honored to be recognized in this way by The Legends Tour and by French Lick Resort,” added Scranton, who now lives in St. Augustine, Fla.

“It has been such a blessing to be a part of this great group of women and French Lick Resort has not only hosted The Legends Tour Championship for the past four years, but it also created a home to showcase the best women golfers in our history,” Scranton said.

While she is a native Texan, Palmer grew up and played junior golf in Bangor, Maine. She attended North Texas State University, where she was runner-up in the 1961 National Collegiate Championship. She was also a four-time winner of the West Texas Amateur and won the 1963 Texas State Women’s Amateur Championship.

Palmer turned professional and became an LPGA Tour member in 1964. She went on to win 19 professional events, including major championships at the 1972 Titleholders Championship and 1975 U.S. Women’s Open.

Palmer also was the LPGA’s top money winner and Player of the Year in 1975, and she finished in the top 10 on the LPGA’s season money list from 1968-1977. She played in her last LPGA Tour event in 1997.

Palmer was inducted into the Texas State Golf Hall of Fame in 1985, as well as into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1988.

She is a Class A LPGA Teaching Professional and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top-50 LPGA teachers. Palmer currently is the director of women’s golf at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, Calif.

In addition, Palmer has played in more than 30 Legends Tour tournaments and routinely still competes in the Legends Honors Division for players age 63 and over.

“It’s wonderful that the Legends Hall of Fame has a home and that a competition for senior women professionals has a worthy stage,” said Palmer. “French Lick definitely brings out the best in your game.”

As an amateur, Scranton won the 1981-1982 St. Louis Metro Championship, the Southern Illinois Championship (1979, 1982-83) and the 1983 Illinois Women’s State Championship.

Collegiately, Scranton attended both Florida State University and the University of Kentucky, where she registered three top-five finishes, including two collegiate tournament wins. Scranton was named to the 1983 All-Southeastern Conference list.

The Illinois native qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt and was a rookie in 1985. She went on to win three LPGA tournaments, including one major championship – the 1991 du Maurier Classic. In addition, she was a member of the 2000 U.S. Solheim Cup Team

After giving birth to twins Libby Jane and Luke Scranton in 2004, Scranton began competing on The Legends Tour, where she has won five times and posted 16 top-10 finishes.

Scranton has also been a stalwart on The Legends Tour’s Team USA for its ISPS Handa Cup competitions, on which she has contributed 19 points and compiled an 8-6-3 match record in the team matches event.

With their induction this summer, Scranton and Palmer will become the ninth and tenth members of the Legends Hall of Fame.

“I was really caught off guard when I found out about this induction,” added Scranton. “I was out of the country visiting my sister and her family in Italy, so it was fun to get to celebrate the news with her.”

Annual inductions include one active member of The Legends Tour who is still regularly competing in official Legends Tour events and one semi-retired Legends Tour member who has made a significant impact on the game during her LPGA and Legends Tour careers.

Palmer and Scranton will join Legends Tour Hall of Fame members Sandra Haynie and Elaine Crosby (inducted in 2016), JoAnne Carner and Rosie Jones (2015), Nancy Lopez and Jane Blalock (2014), and Jan Stephenson and Kathy Whitworth (2013).

Rockwind Community Links Ranked by Golf Digest as One of the Best Courses in New Mexico

(Hobbs, NM)Golf Digest’s 40th annual Best in State course rankings were just published and Rockwind Community Links makes the list for the first time at No. 8 in New Mexico.

The Andy Staples design has received numerous accolades from leading industry publications including: one of Golf Digest’s Best New Courses of 2015; a Top Five New Golf Development in the World by Golf Inc. Magazine; and a 2017 Best Courses You Can Play recognition by Golfweek. The United States Golf Association singled out Rockwind for breaking the mold and being more than just a golf course with a special video entitled “A Model Muni: Rockwind Community Links.”

The facility is considered a trailblazer in uniting golf with the local community. “Community Links” is a concept introduced by Staples and expanded by City Manager J.J. Murphy where the focus of the entire project was to link the golf course to the fabric of life in Hobbs. A special feature is a surrounding trail system complete with multiple trail heads, various outdoor seating areas, picnic spaces and scenic viewing points, including access to the site’s five acre lake that overlooks the golf course.

“As a municipal manager, a primary focus is to get the best return on our investments, and this can come in many forms: enhanced quality of life, increased number of rounds, increased utilization and participation in our programs, or a combination of all of the above,” said City Manager J.J. Murphy. “Being recognized #8 in the ‘Best in State’ rankings by Golf Digest is a perfect example of a high return on the city's investments. The dedication and hours of work from staff, volunteers, and elected officials to this investment is still paying off through recognition and the number of visitors who still recognize our crown jewel. Whether visitors to Rockwind Community Links are golfers or non-golfers, it will be a special place for everyone.”

Murphy refers to his vision that began years ago and was put into action with the approval by the Commission in 2013 to move forward with a redesign and reconstruction of Ocotillo Golf Park. The first steps of the process included creating a volunteer committee of community members to assist with the important framework decisions, such as what the concept for the new course would be, how the transition from a functioning golf course to a construction site would take place, what the new course would be called, and much more.

The committee and administration’s selection of Andy Staples as the course designer would prove to be one of the most important decisions of all, as Staples pitched the initial idea of the “community links,” and Hobbs has now become the first example for the innovative concept across the country.

“Rockwind Community Links is a solid blueprint for the future success of growing the game of golf in a community,” said PGA tour professional and champion Fred Couples, who learned to play golf on a public course and was one of the featured guests at the Rockwind grand opening. “The vision and leadership of the team delivering this jewel was amazing. You’re not going to see many public facilities like this in the country – it’s just phenomenal.”

Topgolf and ClubCorp Team up to Accelerate Innovation for Golf Industry

Topgolf enhancing ClubCorp member experiences at ranges and courses, while ClubCorp offers Topgolf guests new ways to enjoy golf

(DALLAS) - Topgolf, the global leader in sports entertainment with the world's largest digital golf audience, is teaming with ClubCorp – The World Leader in Private Clubs – to grow interest and participation in golf among Topgolf's 10.5 million players and ClubCorp's 430,000 members. The strategic alliance, announced today, results in Topgolf providing new technology and benefits for ClubCorp members, and ClubCorp providing special offers and experiences at ClubCorp clubs.

"Topgolf is leading the next generation of the sport and constantly innovating to attract new fans to golf. Our alliance with ClubCorp signifies our commitment to not only help Topgolf guests transition to green grass, but also refresh how ClubCorp and Topgolf fans play both on and off the course," said Topgolf Entertainment Group Co-Chairman and CEO Erik Anderson.

While specific program elements are being finalized, Topgolf and ClubCorp leaders see opportunity to enhance the golfing experience across physical and digital platforms. For example, Toptracer Range, Topgolf's newly released product for driving ranges, could bring a more interactive format to the private clubs' driving ranges. Players can track their ball flight path as they hit, receiving real-time insights on speed, distance, angle and accuracy for a more interactive, gamified experience.

"Both Topgolf and ClubCorp have been leading the industry in encouraging fun golf entertainment," said ClubCorp CEO Eric Affeldt. "That's why a ClubCorp and Topgolf collaboration is so interesting. With our more than 430,000 members across North America and Topgolf's tremendous reach among new golfers and even non-golfers, we have an opportunity to introduce and reinforce the great game among a massive audience."

Topgolf Swing Suite, a social experience featuring Topgolf simulators, comfortable lounge seating, HDTVs and food and beverage service, would give ClubCorp members year-round, climate-controlled practice space where they could perfect their swings in the off-season. Topgolf's first Swing Suite, launched earlier this year, is located at the Four Seasons Hotel in Houston. Topgolf recently made an investment in Full Swing Golf, the company behind the simulator technology, to expand its Swing Suite business.

Topgolf plans to offer ClubCorp members special offers to visit its sports entertainment venues. Likewise, ClubCorp plans to provide added value to Topgolf Platinum Members with exclusive tournaments at ClubCorp properties, as well as special offers and programs at clubs across the country.

"We're thinking differently by giving people new ways to enjoy the game – on the course, at Topgolf, even on their phones and through other interactive experiences," Anderson said. "This is just the beginning of what Topgolf and ClubCorp can do together."

New at The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, Colorado: Hack and Hook Wilderness Retreat for Groups

Forbes Five Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort offering opportunity for exclusive access to acclaimed golf courses and the best private fly-fishing in Colorado

(RELEASE) - Planning a group getaway or corporate retreat? The Broadmoor's new Hack and Hook package (only available for groups) allows for a choice of overnight stays at the property’s Cloud Camp at the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, 3,000 feet above The Broadmoor, or at the main Broadmoor resort campus, followed by a stay at Fly Fishing Camp, The Broadmoor's private fishing retreat.

“If you live in a big city or come from the flatlands of the Midwest, you are in for a surprise. We provide true luxury wilderness experiences and are a perfect excuse to escape from the world for a couple of days. And, yes, cabins have high-speed Internet,” says Russ Miller, director of golf operations at The Broadmoor.

After a hearty breakfast, the itinerary includes a mix of golf on The Broadmoor’s distinctive courses followed by a fly-fishing experience on five miles of private river.

Set in the Cheyenne Mountain foothills of Colorado Springs, The Broadmoor Golf Club is ranked among the best in the world and is home to the 2018 U.S. Senior Open Championship. The property’s three iconic courses were designed by some of golf’s greatest names and have played host to numerous national tournaments, including the U.S. Women's Open and PGA Cup Matches. Presidents, politicians, celebrities, and many of the game’s greatest athletes have all played at The Broadmoor.

As part of this special offering, guests will then experience the best fly fishing in Colorado at The Broadmoor's Fly Fishing Camp, an old-time rustic fishing lodge on 76 acres next to one of state's top-rated trout streams, with five miles of private river frontage. Guests will have the opportunity to catch four different species of trout (rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat). Since each fish requires a different challenge, a river guide is provided for every two guests, ensuring proper instruction. Fly Fishing Camp also gives guests the unique opportunity to "catch and cook" their fish if they so choose.

"Individual techniques are required depending on the time of day and type of fish. Similar to how you don’t want to play a golf course wherein every hole is a par 4, the challenge to hook different trout under variable conditions is invigorating," said Miller.

Bobby Weed Golf Design Redesigns Practice Facility at Interlachen Country Club

(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida) – Bobby Weed Golf Design (www.bobbyweed.com) has completed a redesign of the practice facility at Interlachen Country Club, a private invitation-only club in Winter Park, Fla.

“Players will welcome this new complex for its low-profile short-game greens, allowing for precisely-calibrated practice,” said Bobby Weed.

The new facility features a 10,000 square-foot putting green with subtle contours, a chipping green with generous surrounds to allow for a variety of shots and a bunker green with four bunkers of varying sizes.

“Effective practice should focus on developing confidence and repetition,” Weed added. “We have created a facility that allows golfers to develop these attributes.”

The project also includes an enlarged main tee area on the range, with a two-bay academy building planned for the future.

Said Chris Monti, Weed’s design partner: “The entire facility is intended to mimic what we hope will be a course-wide renovation in the near term. We’ve utilized new, updated turfgrass varieties, a new bunker aesthetic and more short cut surrounds.”

LandIrr Golf Construction, a local golf course contractor, is performing all aspects of the facility upgrades.

Golf Channel Announces "Summer of '76," Next Golf Films Project, Premiering Ahead of The 146TH Open

Summer of ’76 to Revisit 1970s Era of Professional Golf; Johnny Miller’s 1976 Open Victory Over 19-Year-Old Star in the Making, Seve Ballesteros

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – As temperatures rise this July with The Open returning to Royal Birkdale, Golf Channel today announced that its next Golf Films’ project will dive into one of the coolest periods in the sport’s history, the 1970s, with a one-hour special, Summer of ’76, premiering on Tuesday, July 18 at 9 p.m. ET following Golf Central Live From The Open.

In July of 1976, America celebrated it’s Bicentennial. At the same time, golf descended on a sweltering Royal Birkdale along England’s West Coast, where two of the game’s transcendent figures collided. Johnny Miller was the California golden boy, at one time appearing to be the heir apparent to Jack Nicklaus atop the sport. A fiery and charismatic Spaniard with an uncanny feel for the game, Seve Ballesteros was just 19-years-old, but well on his way to becoming the Arnold Palmer of European golf. In the end, Miller won the Open, Ballesteros won the hearts of fans, but the ultimate winner was professional golf.

“Winning The Open in ‘76 was one of fondest moments of my career,” said Miller. “The course was totally burnt out. I hit 1-iron off the tee and don’t remember missing one fairway the whole week with it, which was my key to winning. I hadn’t heard about Seve at all, but that changed quickly when he led after the first round. He hit driver everywhere, slashing it out of places like Arnie used to do. I knew that he was going to be great, no doubt about it.”

Through interviews with Miller, Tom Watson, Peter Alliss, and dozens of others, Summer of ’76 recalls the excitement of seeing Ballesteros for the first time, and the brilliance summoned by Miller en route to winning the Claret Jug. Ballesteros’ week commenced a true emergence of European stars across the sport over the next decade, joined by the likes of Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam all factoring in major championships and collectively sparking a European resurgence in the Ryder Cup. The film also pops with the groovy style of the ‘70s when golf was looser, with stiff shots on and off the course, and when the sport was still in its relative television infancy.

In addition, the film will touch upon relevant cultural and societal trends in the mid-70s, in an era when people grew their hair and wore bellbottoms and cranked up The Steve Miller Band, Marvin Gaye and Queen on eight tracks inside their Pontiac Firebirds. The principals whimsically remember the music they listened to, cars they drove, clothes they wore and the equipment they played, which required a level of artistry that many feel has been lost in the modern game. Summer of ’76 also tackles the question that has long been debated: how would the best of that era stack up against the best of today?

“Maybe as I get older I’m feeling a bit nostalgic, but even Jack Nicklaus, who came of age in the brush cut 1950s, let his hair down in the 70s,” said Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, who will serve as a co-producer and writer of the film. “Some of my all-time favorite players were either at the height of their power or just ascending: Jack, Gary Player, Johnny, Tom Watson and of course, Seve. And that era produced so many tough guys with homemade swings, like Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Lanny Wadkins and Hubert Green. That Open of ’76 at Birkdale is a perfect jumping off point to look at one of the coolest, most stylish periods in golf, the 1970s.”

Summer of ‘76 is being produced by Golf Films, led by 13-time Emmy Award-winning coordinating producer Israel DeHerrera, who has served as the lead producer for several critically acclaimed projects, including the three-part Arnie (2014) and Jack (2017) films on Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. In addition to DeHerrera and Lerner, who makes his debut as a co-producer for a Golf Films’ project, James Ponti also will serve as a co-producer for Summer of ’76. Other award-winning projects produced by Golf Films include the Emmy-nominated Payne, on the late Payne Stewart; Arnie & Me, a follow-up, fourth installment of Arnie; ’86, a chronicle of Nicklaus’ final major championship win at the 1986 Masters that aired to coincide with the 30th anniversary of his iconic win; and Ben Crenshaw: A Walk Through Augusta, on the two-time Masters champion, and his special relationship with the tournament.

Etowah Valley Celebrates 50 Years of Golf at the 'Brickyard'

(ETOWAH, N.C.) – A golf course that sprang from unique beginnings celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer.

Etowah Valley Golf & Resort, which transformed the hardscrabble terrain of a brick mining operation into a popular mountain golf destination, opened to much praise July 8, 1967. Architect Edmund Ault designed a long and challenging 18-hole layout and crafted nine more holes in 1988.

The resort now spreads across 246 manicured acres with 27 holes of golf, 65 lodge rooms, three restaurants, a 200-seat banquet facility and a 200-seat outdoor pavilion.

And after a few rough years during the Great Recession, new owners have invested nearly $2 million in the stay-and-play resort to set the stage for another 50 years of golf at the brickyard.

“There are not a lot of clubs that have been around 50 years. We’re very proud of it and we’ve done a lot of good things since the course first started in 1967,” says head golf professional Rick Merrick. “Our new owners came in a few years ago and provided the capital and vision to turn things around. They have a great plan and it’s exciting to see what they’re doing.”

The ownership group, based in nearby Asheville, is comprised of 14 partners. Managing partner Tim Rice learned to play golf at Etowah years ago and feels strongly that his group has charted a successful future for Etowah Valley.

“We have a vision for Etowah Valley Golf & Resort and feel good about the plan and execution after nearly three years,” says Rice, whose group took over in late 2014. “Our members and resort guests are excited about our efforts. They see that our dollars are being well spent.”

In just under three years, the ownership group has purchased a new fleet of golf carts and course maintenance equipment, installed a new irrigation system on the South Nine, hired a veteran course superintendent respected industry-wide, renovated all 65 lodging rooms, upgraded the on-site restaurants, and purchased and rebranded a smokehouse on the edge of the resort.

Rice says Etowah Valley’s leaders have always shown great vision, from Bruce Drysdale, the owner of the brick corporation who conceived the course, to his daughter and son-in-law, Betty Anne and Frank Todd, who built the facility, ran it for decades, and expanded it to a stay-and-play resort with 27 holes.

“We recognize Frank Todd and his family for being pioneers in the hospitality business in Henderson County,” Rice says. “Especially for them to have the vision to reclaim a distressed piece of land that had been stripped of all the clay for bricks. They put a lot of love and care into it and here we are celebrating their vision 50 years later.”

The biggest improvements people will notice this 50th summer involve course conditions, accommodations and guest service.

Course superintendent Steven Neuliep is in the third year of a five-year plan to elevate course conditions. He has removed trees to improve turf growth, worked on drainage and irrigation issues, and made great strides with the bent grass greens. Neuliep delays opening each nine one morning a week for extensive maintenance that can’t be done when golfers are on the course.

The lodging component has been upgraded as well. Each room received new furnishings and bathroom fixtures, high-definition flat screen televisions and high-speed Wi-Fi.

“We brought the hotel lodging up to modern standards,” says Rice, noting that all rooms on property overlook the golf course.

On the hospitality side, the non-descript snack bar in the clubhouse has been tripled in size, with a bar and dining patio added. Now called Zeke’s Greenside Tavern, it seats 160 and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, with live entertainment throughout the week.

Chelsea’s Events Center, also on property, serves an extensive country breakfast buffet seven days a week, and the partnership purchased the original BBQ Shak on the edge of the South Nine and rebranded it the Old Etowah Smokehouse. The pit-cooked barbecue is quite popular and the pickle-brined dipped chicken recently appeared on the cover of Garden & Gun.

Of course, the main attraction at Etowah Valley is the course itself. Most layouts built a half century ago have become outdated by modern technology that allows golfers to hit the ball much farther. But Ault designed the original 18 holes at nearly 7,000 yards, which remains a stout number to this day, and the third nine is a respectable 3,318 yards in length.

“Most people think when they come to the mountains they are going to play a real hilly golf course, but we’re in a valley here,” says Merrick. “And we’ve got three different nines. Our South Nine is relatively flat, but tree-lined and very challenging. Then our West Nine is kind of rolling hills and a little bit wider in the fairways and a little bit longer. Then we have the North Nine built in the late 1980s that is a little shorter, but hillier with smaller greens and a totally different look.”

In 26 years at Etowah Valley, Merrick has seen a lot of repeat customers from all over the nation. He credits the convenience factor of having a stay-and-play facility with all the amenities.

“Golfers feel like they are playing a different golf course each day when they pair two nines together,” Merrick says. “They play golf all day and don’t have to go anywhere for dinner or hospitality. We have groups that have been coming here for nearly 40 years and there are people booked here for the next 10-12 years. They really enjoy it.”

For information about tee times or stay-and-play packages, call 828-891-7022 or go to www.EtowahValley.com.

Introducing the All-New D.N.A. Helix from FJ

Built for performance; Shaped by experience; Wrapped in innovation

(RELEASE) - The latest version of the very successful D.N.A. (DryJoys Next Advancement) franchise launches today with the introduction of the all-new D.N.A. Helix. Featuring a wider platform and a structured, lightweight construction to create power from the ground up, DNA Helix is available on footjoy.com and wherever FJ golf shoes are sold.

Originally launched in 2014, the DNA category has been widely adopted at every level of play, including on the worldwide professional Tours.

Inspired by that heritage of success, DNA Helix was developed from the ground up based on specific feedback from the world’s best players who value the combination of flexibility and comfort but requested more platform stability, particularly in the heel area of the shoe.

“I’ve worn every version of DNA and this is by far the best for me,” said Scott Stallings. “The additional support they built in, especially laterally as I move back and through the ball, is fantastic.”

The new NitroThin 3.0 TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) outsole foundation in DNA Helix was developed to deliver the additional stability requested by Tour players. In fact, DNA Helix is 38% more stable than its predecessor. This was achieved by increasing the width between the cleat receptacles in the heel by 13% for more surface coverage underfoot. In addition, a new fit-bed was developed with more lateral stability and the integration of a 3D FoamCollar also helps to lock the player’s foot in place.

The new outsole also features strategically placed cut-outs in the TPU to expose more of the softer midsole which contributes to this outsole being 23% lighter than the previous version as well as being more flexible.

Troon Selected to Manage Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Troon, the leader in golf course management, development, and marketing, has been selected to manage the Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club in Wickenburg, Arizona. Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club was created as a private club reserved exclusively for members and their guests. Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club is currently open to a limited amount of unaccompanied non-member play.

Located in historic Wickenburg, Arizona, approximately one hour northwest of downtown Phoenix near the intersection of Highways 89 and 93, Wickenburg Ranch is in a class by itself. Developed by Phoenix-based The M3 Companies, featuring Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch, Shea Homes’® newest Active Lifestyle resort community offers a one-of-a-kind lifestyle, model homes starting at $200,000 and up offering three feature builders. The dramatic desert surroundings and first-class amenities invite you to come outside and play. Wickenburg Ranch is not a community planned around a golf course; it was designed to blend both environments naturally, making it a truly unique experience.

The Golf & Social Club is the centerpiece of the Wickenburg Ranch community. The club’s 18-hole par 71 course, known as Big Wick, opened in 2015 and was designed by Bill Brownlee of The M3 Companies and Wendell Pickett of Greey│Pickett. Since opening, Big Wick has received numerous accolades including being named No. 4 on Golf Digest’s list of “Top 10 Best New Courses in North America” in 2015 and No. 5 on Golfweek’s 2017 list of “Best Courses You Can Play in Arizona.”

The club’s 9-hole par 3 course, known as Li’l Wick, was also designed by Brownlee and Pickett with music streamed throughout the course and a more relaxed dress code for the ultimate casual golf experience. Surrounding the Watering Hole, an inviting bar and grill, this short game course seamlessly blends golf and entertainment. When the fun spills over into the evening, the final four holes and putting green are nicely lighted.

The approximately 40,000 square foot clubhouse was designed by architect Bing Hu and the clubhouse design just won the prestigious Pacific Coast Builders Conference Gold Nugget Award of Merit for Best Recreational Facility. Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club offers endless views, casual and fine dining, the signature Alvea Spa, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The Courts & Sports Complex includes four championship tennis courts, six pickle ball courts, horseshoes and bocce ball.

“Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club is an exciting new property that has already received high praise in the golf world,” said Mike Ryan, executive vice president, co-chief operating officer, Troon. “We look forward to engaging and growing the membership and further elevating the level of service and member programming at this outstanding club.”

As part of Troon’s management agreement, full golf members of Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club will be eligible for the Troon Privé Privilege program, which provides access to more than 80 Troon Privé-managed private clubs across the globe. In addition, all Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club members will enjoy exclusive access and savings at Troon’s portfolio of more than 150 daily-fee, resort and private clubs around the world, via Troon Advantage.

“JVT Investors and M3 are very grateful for the team at BlueStar. The amazing work completed so far shows in the accolades received from across the country. We will continue to partner with Shea Homes in Wickenburg Ranch, and the community will remain a Trilogy Resort Community,” said Larry Van Tuyl, CEO and President of JVT Investors. “As we continue to grow the community, add additional builders and scale our memberships, we decided that Troon could scale with that growth, and we look forward to the expanded benefits Troon brings to our existing and future members.”

“The town of Wickenburg has contributed greatly to our growth,” added Van Tuyl. “We are happy to continue to employ a significant number of residents from Wickenburg and the surrounding areas.”

(SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.) - Eaton announced that its Golf Pride Grips Division was the most used swing and putter grip brand played at the 2017 United States Open Championship at Erin Hills.

The #1 Grip in Golf was trusted by 125 of 156 players (80%) in the tournament field at the 117th U.S. Open, including the champion, who relied on Tour Velvet Cord model grips and a Golf Pride putter grip, in his first career major victory. GolfStyles Selected as Top Publication at 2017 International Network of Golf Conference

(FAIRFAX, Va.) – For the third time in the last five years, GolfStyles Magazine, a regional magazine based in the Mid-Atlantic region of America, was selected as the Best Publication at the International Network of Golf Conference.

The ING Conference, held this year at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida, brings together leaders from the business side and the media side of the golf industry. The focus of the conference is twofold – education in the many phases of the business side of golf, and relationship building through networking.

“It is an honor to be selected once again,” said GolfStyles publisher Michael Keating. “At GolfStyles we have been dedicated for more than 20 years to presenting a unique product that doesn’t always walk down the center line of the golf industry. It’s nice to see our originality recognized.”

The issue that was on display at the conference was the Spring Issue, which covered everything from the best products at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, to a feature story on football’s Ron Jaworski and his golf empire, to a look at presidential golf – and the current resident of the White House, Donald Trump.

“A number of the best golf magazines in the country were on display at the ING Conference,” reported Tony Leodora, Philadelphia editor for GolfStyles. “A lot of work goes into all of the publications. Coming out on top is a tribute to all at GolfStyles, who combine to put out a quality product.”

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – PUMA Golf, a leader in golf apparel innovation, design and style, introduced its new Autumn Winter 2017 collection showcasing new, sophisticated graphics, an evolved color palate and elevated technical elements, that are designed to enhance on-course performance and provide looks that work from the first tee to the office and everywhere in between.
